Let's jump into the details!

About the Trolley

The Pensacola Beach Island Trolley program operates three open-air trolleys designed for short, breezy rides across the island. Managed by Escambia County Area Transit (ECAT) and funded by the Santa Rosa Island Authority (SRIA), this service helps ease traffic, reduce emissions, and offer visitors a relaxed, car-free way to get around.

  • GPS-enabled: Each trolley is equipped with a real-time GPS system that updates every 30 seconds. You can track its location from your phone (more on that below)

  • Eco-conscious travel: The fleet runs on diesel but helps cut down on the number of individual cars on the beach during peak months.

  • Fun to ride: With open sides and island-style seating, the ride itself is part of the beach experience.

When Does It Run?

The Trolley operates during the high tourism season, generally from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and occasionally during major island events like the Blue Angels Air Show or Pensacola Beach Air Show.

  • Starting date of operation (estimated): May 23 – Sept 1 (Be sure to check the Santa Rosa Island Authority's website for the official start and end dates every year)

  • Operating hours: Daily, 4:00 PM to midnight

  • Last pickup: 11:30 PM

During peak times, all three trolleys are active on a continuous loop, reducing wait times. The average wait is usually around 10-15 minutes between trolleys, depending on traffic and boarding times.

Pro tip: If you're planning a sunset dinner or night out at Casino Beach, the trolley is one of the easiest ways to get around without worrying about parking.

How much does it cost?

It's completely free to ride! No tickets, passes, or reservations are needed; just hop on and enjoy.

This service is made possible through a partnership between SRIA and ECAT to enhance the visitor experience while promoting sustainability and accessibility on the island.

Where are the stops located?

There are over 20 designated stops along the beach route, covering popular condos, beach parks, shopping areas, and restaurants. Stops run between Park West near Fort Pickens and Portofino Island Resort at the east end of the island.

  • Check the full map here: Trolley Route & Stops

  • Each stop includes a name and number (e.g., #7 Emerald Dolphin (S)).

  • The "S" indicates the southbound route; "N" indicates for northbound route if returning.

Pro tip: Download the trolley map or save it to your phone to quickly reference your stop while you're out exploring.

How do I find my trolley stop number?

Once you've located your closest stop on the map, take note of both the number and direction. Some units or resorts may have multiple stops nearby, so choosing the right one saves you time.

  • Example: Stop 12 Hilton (N) indicates northbound service in front of the Hilton Pensacola Beach.

This numbering system is essential for tracking your ride via text message or when speaking to your driver.

When will the trolley be at my stop?

There is a very helpful Trolley Tracker! If you would like to know when the trolley will be at your stop, there is a text message system set up with GPS tracking to let you know an estimated time of when it will arrive. Here's how to do it:

  • Identify your stop number from the map.
  • Text SRIA [space] stop number to 41411 (Example: SRIA 7)
  • You'll receive a text back with the estimated arrival time for the next trolley at that stop.

Tip: The tracker is especially useful during busy evenings or if the weather looks uncertain.

Is it wheelchair or stroller accessible?

Yes, the trolleys are ADA-compliant and accessible to guests with mobility devices or strollers.

  • Wheelchairs should be locked in place while riding.
  • Strollers are welcome and can usually be rolled directly aboard.

This makes it an excellent transportation option for families with small children or those needing assistance.

How old do you have to be to ride?

All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and there are no age or ticket restrictions.

Tip: Kids tend to love the open-air ride and bell dings—it's a fun part of the beach vacation experience.

Will we get wet if it rains?

While the trolleys are open-air, they come equipped with roll-down side covers to help protect passengers from wind and light rain.

  •  Keep in mind: service may be temporarily delayed or suspended during severe weather for safety reasons.

  • Check the SRIA Facebook or ECAT Twitter for updates in case of storms.

Pro tip: Bring a light rain jacket or a towel just in case. Summer showers can pass quickly, but being prepared never hurts.
